Maintaining your ARBOC bus regularly is essential to ensure it operates safely and efficiently. By performing weekly, monthly, and quarterly checks, you can prevent breakdowns and extend the life of your vehicle.
Weekly Maintenance Checks
Every week, you should check the exterior of the bus to make sure the wheels are undamaged and that all studs and nuts are securely fastened. Make sure the tires are inflated to the proper pressure, and verify that the vehicle is level when parked. Additionally, inspect the exterior panels for any damage, and check for fluid leaks under the vehicle and at the axles. You also need to confirm that the power steering reservoir is at the correct level, engine oil is topped up, transmission fluid is at the correct level, and fuel tanks are full.
Operationally, start the bus and ensure that all the instrument panel indicators are working correctly. Test the turn signals, adjust the mirrors for proper positioning, and make sure the windows and windshield provide clear visibility. The windshield wipers and washer system should function properly as well. Check that the destination signs, front and rear doors, and the exit door’s sensitive edge are all operating smoothly. The wheelchair ramp needs to be inspected to ensure it works without issue. Verify that both the interior and exterior lights are functional, the steering column moves as it should, and that the headlights are operational. Make sure the brake pedal, parking brake, and accelerator are responsive. Lastly, check the transmission shift selector to ensure it moves smoothly.
For the wheelchair ramp, inspect the area for cleanliness, especially if operating in environments where salt, sand, or slush is present. During winter months, more frequent inspections might be necessary. Clean any debris or dirt from the ramp, hinges, and shaft areas. Deploy and stow the ramp manually to ensure smooth operation, and repair or replace any components that show signs of wear.
Monthly Maintenance Checks
On a monthly basis, check that the fire extinguisher is securely mounted in its proper location and ensure that the safety pin lock is installed. Inspect the hose to confirm it is in good condition and that the nozzle is not obstructed. Also, verify that the cylinder pressure on the fire extinguisher gauge falls within the green operating range.
Quarterly Maintenance Checks
Every three months, disengage the RED emergency exit handle and remove the ABS plastic door that covers it. Grab the large silver rods located on the back of the door header and push them fully toward the front and rear of the bus. Afterward, re-engage the RED emergency handle while holding one of the bars in place to test for smooth operation. Make sure that when the doors are fully open, deploying and stowing the ramp does not cause it to strike the door.
With the bus turned off, switch the Master Body Switch to “ON.” Use a multimeter to check for 12VDC voltage on both sides of the switch. Then, turn the switch to “OFF.” If there is still voltage on both sides when it’s off, the switch needs to be replaced. Also, clean and lubricate the battery slide trays and check the bus windows. Make sure the Battery Disconnect Switch is in the “OFF” position, then release the RED Emergency handles on the window and push it out. Clean the rubber gaskets and seals around the window with soapy water, then wipe them again with clean water to remove any soap. Leave the window open to let the gasket dry completely. Once dry, check for any damage before closing and locking the window.
